Third fuel pump? Mine lasted 10 years. I can't think of any reason why one would go sooner. It is partially lubricated by the fuel, so that would affect it, but other things would obviously be affected first if there was anything strange about the fuel, like water in the tank, so... beats me. Sorry.

Hmm...I was afraid of that. But thanks for the advice. Is it even normal to have the fuel pump replaced so often? I mean, this will be the third fuel pump if I replace it again ('92 model with 100,000 km)... =(

Rgds,

Richard

If it makes noise its days are numbered and you should replace it right away. There is nothing you can do about it. If it quits you might get home by rapping sharply on the bottom of the tank with a rubber hammer or your fist with the ignition on and ready to try to crank. The bearings will freeze. You could hear it start back up if you're lucky..
I'm supposing your pump is like mine, in the bottom of the tank. If you look just behind and inside the right rear wheel at the bottom of the tank you should see a round stamped section, which is where the pump sits on the inside. It is accessed from a cover plate in the floor of the trunk, and is not hard to replace. Do it with an almost dry tank. Remove the cover plate, then remove the cover plate from the tank itself, to which the pump is attached. It sticks down into the tank.
Good luck.

Hi guys,

The weather here is getting cooler these days (15 degree celcius).

The reason I mention that is because I am having an intermitant rough noise (quite loud and can be heard inside the car with all windows/doors closed) from where the fuel pump motor is? In front of the right rear wheel ('92 E32 735I). I wonder if this could be a dirty fuel filter? Or is it more likely that the fuel pump needing lubrication or something?

Thanks,

Richard
