UK 735i Drivers seatback padding (archive)

My 735i SE 90 has a rod/bar running vertically in the center of the seat back. I am not sure what it is for, but if I do not adjust the seat v carefully it digs in...(to me that is). Is this known? does the seat need upholstery work or is something broken internally? The rest of the seat appears fine.

Lastly any ideas on getting the work done here in SW England (Bristol/Gloucester) and how much it might cost? Many thanks to all.
