You say that "the extra power is not essential to my choice"....

If this is really true, you should get the 735, because in the long run the repair expenses will be alot less (not half as much, but maybe a third less than a 750). The (almost) only reason to buy the 750 is to get the more powerfull engine, because although the extra goodies are nice, in a ten year old car they will eventually cause problems. Now with that said, I drove the 735, 740 , and 750, and very quickly ruled out the 735 as being underpowered for what I wanted....but this is just personal preference, and since I was replacing a two year-old Porsche with the 7er, I was very sensitive to not getting something that was underpowered.

So, drive both of the cars, and decide whether you can live with the lower HP of the 735. If you can, in the long run it will be an easier experience, especially if you are on a budget.

But, before you buy either, make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection. The whole 735 vs. 750 argument is invalid if one or both of the cars has been poorly maintained. Everything on both of these cars is expensive to repair/replace, its just that the 750 has more thing to break. So, history of repair and maintenance is very important. I would take a well maintained 750 over a poorly maintained 735 any day, and vice-versa.

On another note, you probably aren't afraid of repair costs if you own a 635....great cars, but also are not very cheap. A good friend of mine has a '86? 635 euro-version, and he figured out he has spent over $30k in repair and maintenance over the past 5 years.....all for a car worth (maybe) $15k. Ouch. He just recently stuck it in the garage and replaced it as daily driver with a new 540i sport.

Good luck, if the cars are in good shape, either would probably be a good car.

I am torn between two possible purchases. I am selling my 85 635 (beautiful machine...been very good to me)and am looking at an 88-92 7 series to accomodate the family. (Just can't afford to have both, believe me I tried)

Over the course of the last few weeks, I have narrowed down my search to two vehicles, a 90 735 w/82,000 miles, all service records, etc, and an 89 750 w/87,000 miles, all service records, etc. Both appear to be in excellent mechanical condition, and both have excellent interiors and exteriors. The extra power in the 750 is impressive, but not necessarily essential to my choice. The asking prices are comperable as well. $7800 for the 735 and $8200 for the 750, with some room to dicker in both cases.

I want to get the most reliability, pleasure, and eventual resale out of whichever car I choose. I plan to drive this car for about 2 - 3 years. I hoped some of the experts here in 7 series land could help me out with what would be the wisest decision for myself and my family.

Much Thanks.
