Tony: Can't help you with anything in England but might suggest that the bar is the "Lumbar" support. My USA version 740I has an adjustable one to provide extra support for the lower back. It is a terriffic help in comfort on long or short trips. I can drive 700 / 800 miles in per day and get home with my back feeling better than when I started out. Try to adjust it away from your back and see if this relieves the pressure. Otherwise, if it is the seat back cushion that needs replacement the leather cover is held in place by tangs or slits of metal sticking our of the bottom framework under the cover plate. If care is used the leather covers can be removed and the stuffing or foam replaced. Just remember that it is a firm foam. Use of standard foam rubber (two to three pounds per cubit foot density) does not provide firm enough support, it is too flimsy. Attempting to stuff more material in to make up for it will result in the seat bulging like a balloon when not being used. (I tried this in an older Mercedes in which the horse hair had deteriated.) I like these seats so much that I got a seat from a wrecked 740 and made me an office chair. This allows me to do my work in total comfort!
