Could be something other than a heater core problem. Core ususally doesn't produce enough of leakage to cause low coolant warning in a day. If coolant leaks somewhere under the hood the wapor gets sucked into blower. Check all the hoses with engine runing, especially close to the firewall and heater valve (close to the positive terminal). Good luck,

The other night, driving home, I turned on the windshield defroster, and after it had been blowing hot air for about 2 minutes, It started to make a humming noise... I turned it off and continued driving... as I drove the windshield became completely fogged up, and I just kept wiping it with my hand...
When I arrived at home, and stepped out, I could smell burning coolant, and when I turned the car off it said "Coolant Level," When I popped the hood, burnt coolant steam came rushing out... I added coolant and the problem is even worse today... I assume theres a leak somewhere near the resivoir? Also today, thick steam comes out of the vents on the dash...
