I am having trouble removing the thrust arms (upper control arms) on my '94 740i and wondered if anyone has any advice for me.

The problem is access to the nut on the bolt that holds the bearing end of the arm. On both sides of the car this nut is almost entirely covered by a plate that is used to mount the anti-roll bar bushings. I can turn the bolt but the nut, naturally, turns with it. There is certainly no way to get either a socket or wrench on the nut. There is very little clearance.

I have considered modifying a closed end wrench by cutting away half of it but I'm not sure if it would be strong enough after doing that. I also considered removing the anti-roll bar mounting plate to get access to the nut, but it would require removing the large bolt that goes through the pipe cross member. I'm a little worried about doing this because if there is a nut on the end of this bolt it looks as if it would have more difficult access than the one I'm having trouble with.

I have read everything I can find explaining this job (including bently) and no one ever mentions the inaccessability of this nut. I can only conclude that other years of 740s 540s etc. have a slightly different setup. One picture I saw showed the anti-roll bar mount back a few inches further on the frame which allows easy access the the problem nut.

Does anone have any suggestions for me? Should I remove the pipe cross member?

Hey....Just about a month ago i replaced both of my thrust arm bushings by myself. Yes they are very tight to get at the nut. What i did was drop the bolt that goes thru the body of the sway bar which is a plate. It is one bolt about 3 inches long. It screws into the body of the car. Actuall all i did was loosen it enough to let it drop down enough to clear so i could get the 22mm wrench on the nut. All to easy. I then took both of my control arms to the dealer and had them press the old bushings out and press the new ones in. A word of advice to ya. I hope you have the ball joint tool to remove the ball joint end off. ALSO I WOULD SUGGEST YOU RE-INSTALL THE NEW BUSHINGS WITH 750 BUSHINGS. THEY ARE STRONGER AND WILL LAST LONGER. Most BMW parts people or mechs will tell you it is better regardless if the car is a 730, 735, 740 or 750 to install 750 bushings. That ia what i did.
