In addition to what Gilbert suggested, try removing the fuel pump and/or DME relay for each bank of cylinders. If you pull one banks relays adn nothing changes, then you know you have a dead bank at idle.

Note that one bank may idle by itself whereas the other bank may not. I am not sure, but I do not believe that this condition necessarily indicates a problem or a significant problem. My 88 750 will not idle on only cylinders 7-12, but idles contently on 1-6.

I have a 1988 750iL
I was wondering how do you know if you bimmer is running on 6 or 12 cyclinders? Wantcan you do to be absolutly sure if your BMW is running on 6 or 12? Please help...Thanks
