I have heard that E32's do not have the batteries. Yes, some models, as my 87 E28, have batteries. I have not had the opportunity to dismantle my E32 cluster (luckily)to verify. This may have been discussed on this board a while back (recently). The problem may be caused by bad capacitors.

Batteries are located at the back of your speed/rpm display. You can remove this by unscrewing two screws on top and to at the bottom. I advise you only to place orginal BMW batteries, Because those are rechargeable and of a certain type By the way the dealer will replace the batteries in about 5 minutes.
Your car knows 8 different languages you can change them as follows: Turn the ignition key one step then push the button at the right of your speed/rpm diplay for 20 sec and it will diplay the next language pressing again will diplay the next language and so on Succes!!
