I had a similar problem on my 1986 635csi. I'd drive the car, and the engine would seem fine. Then, upon turning the car off and then cranking it again, it would sputter and die. I had to wait about 1/2 hour before it would turn over and stay running. Turns out that there was a cracked distributor cap, which expanded just enough to prevent point contact at higher temperatures.

88 735i w/125k miles.intermittent engine stopping at stop signs.may happen today or next month.runs flawlessly otherwise.yesterday drove it @ 20 miles shut it down for 5minutes,then attempted a restart.it would crank the engine over, start then shutdown.attempted restart,it would crank over, start then shutdown.i let it set for @ 2 hours then started perfectly & home i went a flyin.just changed the fuel filter today , drove it @ 2 miles, drove into garage, shut it down, attempted restart & hark it would just start then die!!any suggestions?????
