All other things being equal (they never are), I'd go for the 90. The '88 models were the first year for the US versions, and there's some weird stuff going on... my '88 5sp was built in 9/97, which happens to be a cutoff date for lots of chassis and electrical stuff. My engine management is DME 1.1, which Bently denies even exists (should be only 1.3 or 3.3). There is ABS, but no traction control, etc. The radio is non-modular, and doesn't support a CD changer. No headlamp washers, depends on how much you like doodads.
On the other hand, I have only a Driver's airbag (I dislike airbags), no "sword" to hose me over, I have a 2-wire O2 sensor (cheaper), and the purchase price was great.
My NEXT car (not that I have any near-term plans) would be either a '90 735i 5sp (even more scarce than '88s), or a '94 740i plus a Metric Mechanic 5sp conversion (LOVE my 5sp!!!). I REALLY like the E32 body.
Either way, it's hard to go wrong if the car has been looked after... and have I mentioned I LOVE my car??!?

'88 735i 5sp
I'm looking to buy a 735i 5-speed, and currently have leads on 2 cars, a '88 and a '90. My mechanic (I currently own a 6-series) told me to stay away from the '88. However, the person that has the '88 in question has replaced a lot of items and seems to be a maintenence freak. The '90 owner seems to know diddly about cars.
Are there any 'gotchas' on the 88 that I should look for? Any gotchas in general regardless of year? I really appreciate any advice that you grizzled 7-series owners can give. I've thoroughly enjoyed my 635 - and can take some consolation in knowing that I'll have the same great 3.5 liter engine in my new 7.
