Sounds like you need to replace the electrolytic caps on the motherboard. We all have to eventually. At least its fairly easy to do.
BMW seem to have been making a fortune out of selling complete motherboards to people who only need a few pennies worth of components.Check the archives for instructions.

The Gas and temperture gauge on my 735i stop working. A BMW specialist told me it could be motherboard, has anyone experienced this problem and if so what has been the resolution?
