I didn't read the previous posts but.....YES, they are that expensive to maintain. The '90 model I think has lots of bugs worked out of the '88 and '89. You found the right place to get service help, here. Find a local BMW recycler and mostly buy used when you can. Keep the tranny fluid changed every 20k or LESS to prevent disaster. Fluid and filter is less that $30.00 if you do it yourself. Expect to put $1,000 to $2,000 a year into it and you will not be surprised. The cost per mile is'nt too bad....but the feeling per mile is priceless.
