I think its transmission bc noise starts as soon as change gear to drive or reverse. As speed picks up noise dies(it might be bc engine noise is louder than transmission noise).

Granted my car is an '88 735i, but when very cold the power steering will whine for a couple minutes. I know of several others that do this as well in Michigan. I have gone the route of replacing the power steering filter in the fluid canister but this didn't resolve the issue. Just a thought. My whine is will change when the steering wheel is changed

When engine/transmission is cold I can hear whining noise, after about 3 miles drive noise gone. I am thinking about changing transmission oil and filter. If you had same problem and got fixed, let me know how you did it.

94' 740i, 110K mile.
