My 88 e32 also runs just past the halfway point about a needle width past the line. You shouldn't change the thermostat unless you want to permanently change the operation temperature of the engine. Mine runs at the same engine temperature from outside temperatures of 10F to 100F. The olly time it runs hotter is if I am sitting in traffic on a real hot day with the A/C OFF. Then it edges up another needle width. With the A/C ON, it runs normal since the Condenser fan is on.
