'90 735iL 155k mi: I am not getting the mileage that I think I should be getting - 18 mpg vs. what most people say should be at least 21 mpg. I am beginning to think that the tranny may not be shifting properly. I will be changing the tranny screen soon.

My question is: what should the RPMs be in the top gear riding steady on a level road? I see about 2100 RPM at 60 MPH and somewhere around 3000 RPM at 80 MPH.

Those are my readings as well. When was the last time you had a tune up/replaced plugs/air filter/had the valves set? In winter I get about 18mpg with a mix of city/highway (more city). During the summer (temps over 70 ) I can get 26 on the highway. Your RPM/roadspeed sounds right.
Regards,
Bill
