I've got an 88 735iL that the fluid had leaked all the way down to the bottom of the resevoir. I refilled the resevoir with the correct fluid and then jacked up the rear end of the car putting a 1x4x6 on top of the jack underneath the middle case of the axle. I lifted the car off the ground and started it, then turned it off and lowered the car. The light warning light has not come on since. Now that may have fixed it or it may not have , but it is cheap to try, if you have a jack.
