Jim, Thanks a lot for explaining that information. I agree with you. Although I have no experience with the 750's, I think that the same principles apply to the M30's in the 735's also. I'm getting ready to do my 3rd head job on my 735i and it's getting old. I was hesitant to believe what the Bentley Manual and other manuals said about replacing the head bolts every time you do a head job, but now I think that it's a safer practice to go ahead and replace them. It's little money in comparison to the time one will spend replacing a head gasket. When torquing the head bolts I think it is very important to do exactly as directed in the Bentley manual. It is somewhat of a pain to torque the head bolts down 3 different times but probably necessary. The first time I had it done by an independent car repair garage that supposedly specialized in BMW's and Jag's. After driving about 400 miles the gasket went bad again! So, I did the job myself and it was good. The one mistake that I made was that I did not replace the water pump. Well, the water pump went bad and the engine overheated causing another blown head gasket. So, I recommend to anybody who is doing head work to also take a good look at your water pump too. I think that these cars are very sensitive to overheating and unforgiving. However, if treated well I think that these engines are awesome, Tim Bryan (88 735i 160k)
