If you have access to air use a impact hammper with pointed tip to drive the ball joint threaded shaft up through the knuckle. BEFORE YOU DO THIS put the nut back on and leave about 1/4" gap between the knuckle and backface of the nut. This way when the shaft comes free you won't jam the hammer tip inside the tapered hole and damage it. DO NOT USE A TORCH! Also my independent service shop has some Urethane bushings custom made for those control arms. They are light years stronger than those rubber of hydraulic bushings BMW uses, will never wear out, and you don't have to press them in, just use a little silicone grease!!! 165.00 per pair and they use a machined center steel shaft that the bolt goes through. Sort of a steel bushing inside a Urethane bushing. The urethane is in 1/2's so they go into the control arm from each side. SO EASY!!! You get 100% area fill for a stonger joint compared to those lame BMW parts. I love them on my cars!!!

I'm trying to replace the upper control arms, but can't get the ball-joint loose. I've tried hitting where it goes through the mount with a hammer and tried a ball-joint separater fork without any luck. What's the next step? Would heating it with a torch help?
