Alex,
I have an 89 750iL. I replace the stock head unit with a high quality deck. I ran my own wires to the deck from the trunk which houses the 10 disc cd player and a high quality Kenwood 4 channel amp. I ran 14 gauge monster cable to each of the four woofers and used the factor wire for the other six speakers. I used factory speaker all around. Here lies the problems, BMW uses a common ground which forces you into bypassing the facotry amp which is mounted driver side trunck quater panel. The biggest difficult is getting the rear seats out of the car and the rear deck lid to get to the rear speakers to run your own cable. I ran the stereo cables down the center console from the gear shift to the back seat. There is a small whole to fit the wires through by the battery. The factory speakers sound much better with a good quality system than the factory amp and deck. I would try this first and if you are still displeased, then replace the factory speakers with aftermarket ones. The factory speakers are good quality. It would be expensive to replace to get a noticable difference. Also, because the car has 10 speakers, you need a really good quality amp to handle the low impedance level or atleast a couple of small amps. If you have more questions I would be happy to answer. Good luck!
