A loud muffler has nothing to do with a bad cat. Usually when the cat(s). fail, they will start to rattle because the honeycomb structure inside has broken/shattered to pieces. The honeycomb failure is usually attributed to rich fuel mixtures which cause the cat to overheat and disintegrate.A loud muffler is probably caused by corrosion eating away at the internal passages not to mention physical holes corroded on the outside shell.
