A loud muffler has nothing to do with a bad cat. Usually when the cat(s). fail, they will start to rattle because the honeycomb structure inside has broken/shattered to pieces. The honeycomb failure is usually attributed to rich fuel mixtures which cause the cat to overheat and disintegrate.

A loud muffler is probably caused by corrosion eating away at the internal passages not to mention physical holes corroded on the outside shell.
