Get a local electronics repair shop to do the capacitor fix and/or check the voltage regulators on the curcuit board. From the schematic I've seen (for a 90 E34 but they were the sake dash as far as I know) there are some cheapish (<$5US) generic components (eg 7805 5v voltage regulator IC) that could fail and leave no running voltage on the board for the gauges you describe (mostly analogue, not the digital stuff).Definitely worth a try compared to $900 as per the other post IMHO. Just make sure they are ESD (electrostatic sensitive device handling protocols, to not fry the chips with static) savvy... I suppose getting your mileage noted incase there is a problem might also be worthwhile if you do go non-dealer.
