730 Loose and wobbley steering HELP! (archive)

I own an 87 730i se auto (e32); the car has 122,000 on the clock. Ever since I bought the car the steering has been vague and sloppy. More recently over the past two to three weeks the steering has suddenly become much worse, both front wheels have play in them and when driving the front of the car wobbles.

I have taken the car to few local garages with varied opinions, such as the steering box, to the pitman arm.

I am very keen to keep the car, as it only cost me £740. And I have had to do some light work to it, but nothing to expensive. Does anybody know of, or had a similar problem?
