Gosh, I hope I never have to make that decision. The fact is the car is not worth as much as you are thinking of spending on it. Even with a new motor in it it won't be worth that much. You can junk the car and buy another with an okay engine and come out ahead. So I wouldn't do it. If it were a later model it would be different.
But I also believe you can find a cheaper alternative. I have seen 1989 models with rough bodies but okay engines go for $3,500 or less. Buy a newspaper from a major city near you, etc.

In pain over spending $11,000 (Installed) for a new engine from Bavarion Engine Exchange in Sacramento on a 1989 750iL with 190,000 miles or looking for a new Car. The newer car wouldn't be a 750. Any opinions...
