I have a 1989 750iL, and my EML light just came on. The car won't accelerate at all. I can start the car, but when I push on the gas pedal, nothing happens. Put it into gear, hit the gas, nothing. Rock steady 1000 RPM (it's very cold here in Wisconsin, so I consider this normal RPM for such weather), even with tranny in drive. Is there any way to pull any error codes, like when pulling codes from the Motronic ECUs? Is this something I can fix or is it a "dealer only" thing? Also, does anyone have any info about how the EML system works in detail? I appreciate all posts! Thanks.
The error codes cover the eml, so "pulling codes" uses the same procedure. If you hit the gas and nothing happens and the engine idles smoothly, it sounds like the eml is not seeing any input from your accelerator pedal. Fortunately, the code extraction procedure also will help test whether the accelerator is sending data.
To extract codes:
turn the ignition to "on" (dash lights up)
now SLOWLY turn the key like you were going to start the car. Keep turning until you feel/hear a slight click.
Hold the key steady in that position. Pump the pedal 5 times through a full motion--all the way off to "to the floor," making sure you in fact have full pedal travel.
after 2.5 seconds the check engine light will blink. 2.5 sec after that, it will start flashing the codes for cylinders 1-6.
repeat the procedure for cylinders 7-12 by pumping the pedal 6 times rather than five.
If you can't trigger this procedure, then the pedal sender/reostat itself may be faulty.
