I started my '89 735 yesterday to move on the driveway. So it didn't run very long.

Today I started it and left it running while I strapped my kids in, when after a few seconds it sounded like there was a lound metallic banging coming from the engine. I pressed the throttle (strange thing to do I know) and after a few secs of running at 1200 rom it stopped, car ran great all day. My Mercedes used to do this occasionally when the oil drained overnight from the one of the hydraulic valve lifters and it neede "pumping up" again, but the E32 doesn;t have hydraulic liftrs.

As it hasn't thrown a rod yet I'm guessing it was the cam chain tensioner that lost oil and the noiise was the chain.

Any ideas ?
