Either way, pipes or core, exploratory surgery is required from what I've read. I'd suggest trying a look at Stefans' site at www.homeofsbc.com for his recounting of how he replaced his core - the pics of access to the dash (both a full strip down and a quicker strip) would probably be good for getting in to assess the damage anyway. Other than that, try the archives...
Overall summary (IMHO): fix is involved, fiddly and time-consuming. However, same remains true if done at dealer (quoted 15hrs labour for fixing my aircon, and then to expect electrical "quirks" from disturbed wiring) and they will be charging.
Sorry to sound a little "limp" on this problem, but I think it's probably something we all dread happening. If it makes you feel better, I've got to "venture in" myself soon to fix shattered stepper motor mounts, and the aircon is kaput (major $$ for parts which won't be being spent!).
If you have to use the car in the meanwhile I'd suggest checking out the feed to the heater valve block and the return pipe and see if you can block off or bridge (with a pipe) the two, isolating the heater totally; at least it's usable then as a vehicle.
(sincerely) Good luck.
Car started to overheat and steam came out everywhere inside and outside the car. After adding water, I notice water just pouring out under car around the console area.
Could it be a water heater hose or core? How complicated is it to fix if that is the ploblem?
Thanks
