Hi everyone thanks for your great online info.
I have an 88 735i and hope someone can advise how to remove the top section of the rear seats. Have tried without success.

i have a 750, but it should be about the same:

1. pull down the center armrest and uncover the single attachment bolt and remove it

2. remove the bottom seat cushion.

3. i cant remember which is first, but now you should be able to remove the plastic at the top of the seat, covering the seat belt pulley. you also should be able to lift the rear seatback, which is hinged that the top.

4. about 2/3rds of the way up from the bottom of the rear seatback there is a small bolt which has, as i recall, a 10mm head. This bolt holds the hinge. Remove the bolt and the seatback should pull out. {this bolt is a total sunofabitch to put back in)
