it doesn't sound like jim has the same seat that i have in my 88 735i. mine is much easier than he described, i just had it out while replacing my struts.
1. pull down armrest and flap that has the velcro at the top
2. behind that there is a metal bar with 2 holes in it. you squeeze them together to remove the armrest.
3.remove the 2 nuts which i believe are plastic and 10mm.
4. pull the seat out just past these studs and start lifting up.

if you ar careful you can do this with out removing any seatbelts or their covers.
