Could easily be the battery - just takes one cell to dry out or short and it's either below voltage or below current and in both cases the alt will probably keep the systems up as best it can (as long as you keep the revs up enough that it can generate sufficient power). Just unusual in that it's a sudden failure, that's why I suggested checking the charge wiring too: I dunno how long an E32 would take to run a battery dry with no top-up charge from the alt.

Under those conditions (failed/flat battery, running off alt output) I'd expect a very rough idle, esp if you start powering up lights/aircon clutches etc.

Just be careful of sparking the battery or creating any voltage spikes/surges!!

Max, Thaks for posting so quickly. Replaced regulator once. Thought is was the problem. I'm thinking the battery was drained so badly that its not getting enough charge to keep the car running.
