Thanks Max,
I guess as you said getting a consistent polished
surface with a wheel would be difficult if not
impossible. Media blasting would provide the most
consistent surface finish. Perhaps the answer then is to powder coat in light silver if
I want more of a natural metal look versus the
black scheme of late model Bimmers.
Any further advice from the board is appreciated.

I think the go for polishing this sort of stuff with fine ribs is to "bead blast" it - glass beads of varying diameters, getting smaller. they shatter on impact and so scrub in the process. Smaller diameters get progressively finer...

You could also go for a CLEAR powdercoat over the plain metal with a light bead-blast to get it to a consistent sheen beforehand...

I know I tried buffing on one of my BMW motorcycle covers and the ribs looked yuk afterward - ended up painting instead...

Just my 2c worth

Hi Gordon,
Tried to send you an E-mail, but my system (at
work) blocked it. Will post instead.
Your powder coat work looks nice. Wondered if you
could send me a quote for powder coating my M-30
valve cover...can ship from Michigan.

Second, wondered if you had ever "polished" the
aluminum valve cover? Too much maintenance? How
about media blast off Cosmolean coating and polish
with buffing wheel..increasing grit# until high
shine then clear coating? Would clear coat endure
engine heat over time without yellowing?
Thanks in advance,
George
