that caused all my 93, 740i problems with various engine problems as described in my frantic messages before. I had replaced the valve myself and it was a pretty easy job plus $ 100.- It was probably due for replacement in any case. Car has 120k and one of the vacuum hoses became mushy from the oil spill. I am not sure if the hose was broken before or after my rough handling. In order to get the last invisible torx 30 screw from the bottom part of the valve I had to break the body of the valve to remove the screw with the stripped (not by me) screw head. This replacement did not fix the dead engine problem. After disconnecting the main fuel line and cranking the starter I could not see fuel coming. Then it started flowing. Sometimes it worked sometimes it did not work at all. I finally got to the fuel relay (thanks again everybody for the help in directing me to this obscure location). In order to get better access I disconnected the two big plugs for the two neighbouring modules, first and second from the firewall, (relay rack in the middle) I did not touch the last plug relay farthest away from the firewall). Before removing the fuel and main relays I listened to the clicks when the ignition was turned on, concluding that, at that particular time they were working. I pulled both relays out. Both looked fine: clean on outside, no signs of overheating etc. I put them back and since then the engine starts and runs fine, but the trans program stays on as well as the traction control lights stays on. Overnight disconnection of the battery did not solve any problem. On Monday (Presidents Day) I will be attempting to get to my mechanic 200 miles away in the limp mode, with AAA towing back-up. Wish me more luck, thank you.
