After installing new front thrust arms and rear carrier bushings, something was still wrong. The car was squirrely and pulled under braking. Tonight I jacked it up and did a little more probing. AND I FOUND THE PROBLEM! (I hope) The ball joint on the driver's side front control arm is shot. Then I noticed that the driver's side arm is the steel version while the passenger's side is the aluminum type and appears to be considerably newer. The PO apparently had just the passenger's side replaced before selling me the car. I missed it when I was looking for worn parts because I inspeced the passenger's side first, saw that the arm was nearly new, and spaced off the driver's side. I guess that it's good that I don't do front end work for a living. Anyhow, I can easily fix this and (hopefully) be driving straight and safe for many miles to come. Thanks to all on this board for your help.
