I have an '88 five-speed and the veneer shifter panel was totally shot -- scratched and faded. I sanded and prepped it well, then gave it several coats of flat black "wrinkle finish" paint. When it dried and contracted, the resulting "grain" was an almost perfect match for the black vinyl around the dash and console (my car is black/black, so this fix was easy for me). Looks great!
