I have the infrared locking on my 89 750 and have no problem at all with aiming. If I just point it in the general direction of a window it works. It occured to me that not everyone may know where the IR sensor in the car is, and I have seen people mount radar detectors in the way and then their locks work poorly. For those who don't know it is next to the sunroof switch. Cleaning the surface of this may also help. Tinted windows may also interfere so it would work better to aim through the windshield when trying to lock. The simplest solution would be batteries. If you haven't tried replacing them I would do this. There are four large "button" type batteries inside of the switchblade keys. Feel free to email if you need instructions on opening the key.

Both of your prob's are most probably the same as mine and everyone elses. I have to point it right above the rear view mirror and sometimes takes 2-3 goes. I think BMW should have done some more research back when they came yp with the early keyless system. I still use the remote to avoid unwanted ware'n'tear around the key hole in the door.
