Removal of cosmoline from engine (archive)

91 750iL with yellow cosmoline on engine and other surfaces, is there a cleaner to remove this yellow material without harming other surfaces and materials

Any help would be appreciated.

my car is equipped with remote door opener, light comes on when remote is pressed but nothing happens, where is the control unit, and associated fuses. When I bought the car the battery was dead in the remote, I replaced the battery aimed the remote at the car, it made some noises and now does nothing, I assume a problem due to lack of use.
