The Cosmoline should be removed by the dealer as part of the pre-sale prep, however it seems that it rarely is. The only chemical agent that I understand will work on baked-on, yellowing cosmoline is some sort of paint stripper that one of the board contributors bought from K-mart. It sounds too toxic/caustic to work with frankly.
The best solution I have heard for removing it is having the parts bead-blasted. Many repair shops have bead-blasting cabinets and can do it for a nominal fee.

91 750iL with yellow cosmoline on engine and other surfaces, is there a cleaner to remove this yellow material without harming other surfaces and materials

Any help would be appreciated.

ps

my car is equipped with remote door opener, light comes on when remote is pressed but nothing happens, where is the control unit, and associated fuses. When I bought the car the battery was dead in the remote, I replaced the battery aimed the remote at the car, it made some noises and now does nothing, I assume a problem due to lack of use.
