What follows is BMW's answer to this problem. I believe it is from 1996. I found it on the NHTSA website. This still leaves me with questions, but I'm surprised I was even able to uncover this!

Service Bulletin Number: 34-02903041R

Bulletin Sequence Number: 088

Date of Bulletin: 6702

NHTSA Item Number: SB023861

Make: BMW

Model: 750

Year: 1990

Component: STEERING:GEAR:RACK AND PINION

Summary: PRESSURE SPIKES IN HYDRAULIC SYSTEM CAN SOMETIMES BE HEARD/FELT IN STEERING WHEE L AND/OR BRAKE PEDAL WHEN DS REGULATOR CYCLES-TO DAMPEN PRESSURE SPIKES, NEW HOS ES FROM DS REGULATOR TO BRAKE BOOSTER & FROM DS REGULATOR TO ACCUMULATOR HAVE BE EN INTRODUCED-ALL 1988-91 BMW 750S CE

Open the hood and try to hear the sound at the regulator as someone pushes on the brake pedal. If the sound is coming from the regulator when the brakes are applied, it is the same symptom that I have and as yet have not figured out the actual cause. My brakes also work fine. My noise has been about 10 months since it started. I am also looking for the cause, and looking for help.
1989 750iL. If I were to take a wild guess, I would say the cause is the accumulator going bad. But the cost of an accumulator keeps me from acting on my guess without more information.
I have a 1990 750iL. I can hear what sounds like a valve of some sort open and close in the brake system at intermittent times when applying the brakes, or even when the car is just idling. The noise is clearly audible as well. Sounds like it is under the dash or near the pedal. I have been told that it is likely the "ABS Control Module." Is there any way to remove and test and/or reset the original unit? No use putting a new one in if the old one can be fixed. BTW, the brakes feel fine otherwise and seem to work okay. Thanks for any help.
