Power Steering Pump (archive)

my mechanic thinks the power steering pump is out and needs to be replaced ($450).Is this a reasonable price? Also, the traction control switch was stuck in TC for about a week. Now that I have a new switch in the car, the car sometimes makes a whirring sound and seems a little odd. Has anyone experienced this sound and is it related to the power steering pump possibly out or what?
