Scott has some very good advice, applicable to any car shopping, but I would like to add a comment. If you are looking at and can afford the later models, I would look for a 96 or newer model as both the 740 and 750 went to a new engine that year. (I don't think it was 1997...) Anyway, the new 7 is due out in a month, so the price of the E38s is dropping, and I suspect you can get the later model for as little as $25k by the end of the year. How much more than that you want to spend for a one owner, low mileage car is between you and your wallet. They are all great cars, but any can have problems.
I'm still mad about my new 1986 735 dropping $25,000 in value in 3 months when the E32 came out. I knew little about BMW's at the time, the dealer had said he didn't know when the new ones were coming out (yeah, right), and there was no internet to consult. You're obviously doing the right thing to ask around. Let us know what you decide.
Good luck.

If I'm looking to buy a 1994-2000 750IL. I've tried to read as many articles as possible out of the archives. I currently do all the work on my cars myself, so maitenance is not a huge issue, but I do like to know what I'm getting into. I'm still wondering;
Is there any major problems I should look out for?
Should I try to buy the newest year as possible or is one year stand out?
Is there anything I should have the car tested for, beyond a standard inspection?
Any problems with the V-12 like the 93-95 V-8's have?
Anything, I'm not thinking of?
Thank you in advance for any help or advise.
Matthew
