Try this first. Put in reverse. Step on break and gas at same time. If it jumps into gear at apx 1500-2000 RPM, you can try to get by with re-building just the modulator. There are plastic (plastic-like) ball bearings that can shrink or sweal causing it not to go into reverse. Cost me $800 to rebuild just the modulator.

Backing in my driveway yesterday I put it in reverse, it started slipping and stopped dead in its tracks. Forward gears (auto) work OK. My mechanic says it needs to be rebuilt, $2200 (ugh). Anyone have any good sources for rebuilt trans I can swap in?
