In my experience, the inspections have been just that, a comprehensive inspection of your vehicle. They inspect brakes, steering, suspension, cooling system... They also do a fluid change (oil, brake, trans, diff, Pentosin...) during these inspections.
For oil, I have always used 20/50 in my car and have been thinking about switching to synthetic. You will hear a great deal of opinions on type of oil to use in your car, just make sure you use a quality oil. Oil weight will also depend on the type of driving you do (stop&go, freeway, long distance, short distance), climate and other factors.
As for the brake light circuit message, check all of your taillights. If they have the brass housings replace them with stainless steel ones. This worked for me. You can get these at just about any auto parts store, but you have to ask them for it as they are usually loose items and kept in their storage.

Just picked up a 1991 735 with 140K. First BMW i've ever owned. Its lovely. Few minor things that i'm hopeful for some advice on:

1. With the exception of the last 3 services the car has total BMW main dealer history. The most recent service in August of last year was carried out by a BMW 'specialist'. It was a type 2 inspection. Any quick pointers as to how to verify if the full BMW inspection 2 criteria was applied?

2. Any ideas why the drivers side electric lumbar support does'nt work?

3. Whats the best grade and type of replacement engine oil which I can use?

4. What are the faults associated with the message "brake light circuit etc - check owners manual". The brake lights work fine and the braking itself is faultless!!

Just to add that these cars must be the best kept secret in motoring - my work car is a 'C' class MB - its 9 years newer and comes nowwhere close.

Thanks in anticipation - ANDY
