I'm 100% positive that when its dark and I have lights on, there is light showing from between the the strip which moves along the gearstick and the gearstick assembly. This would indicate there is a lightbulb but its misplaced at the moment.

Even 27 year old Euro fords with auto have lights in the gearstick assembly to indicate the gear, I'd be really surprised if BMW luxury model of the 1990's did not.

So many people have told me that there isn't one that I really have to check this out, I'll post again when I know what it was - it could be the electric window switch illumination or something from the dash glowing and showing up there.
