This one is easy. If it sounded like a horn, then it was a horn. The alarm horn to be exact. The horn is located in the right side cowl area (under the plastic air intake cover, under the wiper blade, nect to the heater fan motor housing.

Possibly, the alarm system had a malfunction. Remember, this is a passive alarm system that activates everytime you double lock the doors.

Always carry tools in your older e32's!!!

Heres one for the books:
In my morning commute, in my 88'735I-(automatic trans. 188,000 miles) after about 8 minutes of driving (3 minutes on the freeway) I heard a VERY LOUD noise that sounded like my Horn was stuck!!! I pulled off the freeway, and turned off the car and when I opened the drivers door, the noise was comming from under the hood. It wasnt the horn, because I could still honk the horn (although you could hardly hear it over the constant howl from the e-box)

When I opened the hood, the noise was deffining, and definately comming from the E-box, which was vibrateing to the touch. Still thinking it was the horn, I pulled the horn fuse to no avail. Unfortunately I did not have my tools, or I would have disconnected the battery lead right there. It seemed like nothing I could do would stop the noise.

After about 8 minutes of trying things, wakeing up 4 square blocks, and scratching my head, I decide to try to find a local garage, since the car was still driveing fine, I got in,
Started the car, and as I put it in drive,
the noise stopped.

Its been a week, and with minimal driveing (maybe 50-75 miles) it has not done it again.

When I pulled the ebox cover...everything looks normal, and of course, the bently manual does not mention this.

Was this some kind of alarm?
What could have possibly made this noise???

I hope nobody ever has to go through this embarassing experience.

Any advise/comments are appreciated.
