thanks Max
I'm going to try opening this thing and doing it myself.. I have a lot of experience in industrial electronics and this may not be of much difference, I wanted to ask (which is always wise) so I don't end up venturing into LALA territory alone. This is what this big family is all about, right.? thanks for the input and I will post the results once I'm done...
P.S. If you don't see my posting in a couple of days, I would have been pulled into digimon world.....
Should be repairable, but depends who'll take it on and how much to get back to working, of course. gales' suggestions are good for the names; also junk yards for other M30 units might be OK, given you **should** be able to swap the "chip" from yours to another compatible Bosch unit - but determining the compatibility is the key. I also think that the part numbers changed with chip upgrades the dealers sometimes did (if they ever looked into the unit).

Background here is that a friend did repair the DME driver transistors on their (older) BMW - the problem was getting past all the goop (potting compound) they can use on assembly, and then still getting a legible part number for the components under that... not a job for the inexperienced or those lacking persistence was the major impression.

Good luck...
