Yes, they can be repaired, or a rebuilt one bought on an exchange basis from numerous sources:

just to name a few.

It's pricey though, around $400 for my old e28 eta, so make sure you've ruled out all other possibilities first. If you're sure it's the ecu/dme, used ones go for about 125 to 150 at junkyards, make sure it's the same vintage/software version.

I've found that 90% or more of the electrical gremlins on these cars are from oxidized connectors or relays with burnt points. A battery which won't hold a full charge will also cause problems.
