Assuming he hasn't swapped stickers, look near the door opening on the driver's side, near where the latch is. There should be a sticker that shows the Gross weights of the car including cargo, as well as a build date showing the month and year of production. Note that many 88 model years were actually built in 87 - my 88 735 has a build date of 4/87.

Hope this saves you the trouble of decoding the VIN.

I am planning to buy a used E32 735 BMW but I think the dealer is lying about the year of make. How can I determine it on my own??
