Congratulations on your joining the ranks. You will find two things incredibly invaluable now that you are the proud owner of an E32...
1) get yourself the king of service manuals for the E32..."BMW 7 Series Service Manual" by Bentley Publishers. It is about two inches thick and gives good instruction, complete with photos, for almost anything the typical DIY (Do It Yourselfer) is willing to tackle.
2) this board and the historical archives of most things you will want to know about your car in the beginning months. Access to the archives is near the top of the main type in a reference word and it searches for relevent discussions. Check the archives under 'Bentley' to find the general concensus on the best/cheapest places to pick up the book.
Here is a shortened version (getting this in at work) of the Bentley instructions:
1) disconnect the -ve battery cable
2) disconnect orange SRS connector on steering column
3) remove lower left dash panel from below steering column
4) working in rear seat, remove ashtray/cigarette lighter cover, disconnect wiring harness and remove rear console mounting screws
5) remove cassette tape box or phone console. Disconnect harness connectors, if applicable
6)Unclip and peel back dust boot at parking brake lever. Remove console mounting screw and remove rear center console section
7) remove transmission shift lever knob. Lift out shift lever cover from top of center console
8) pry out emergency flasher switch, window switch assembly and ASC switch (where applicable) from center console. Disconnect harness connectors from switches
9) open glove compartment. Remove center console side mounting screws
10) carefully pry out heater/AC control head from center console and detach electrical harness connectors
11) lift center console off, twisting the rear end to right to clear parking brake handle
To my knowledgem there are only two issues that you need to watch for with this; one is to remember the radio security code before disconnecting the battery and the other, from what I understand (mine doesn't have one), is dealing with disconnecting the SRS and the resulting "fault" when it is reconnected. Perhaps others can shed light on this one.
It is relatively simple, especially if you have the Bentley with its pictures to walk you through the steps. Good Luck,
