The oil seperator must be the baffles in the valve cover that seperate the oil from being carried out with the crankcase vapors. If the baffles become clogged with baked on oil/sludge/whatever, then the crankcase cannot ventilate (vacuum) properly.

Been looking through th ETK, and could not find any reference to an oil separator. Can you give a location?
