can you describe the little microchips? circular with two metal dots on opposite sides with interlinking fingers across the rest of the circle? if so its an LDR (light dependent resistor ) and sometimes they fail... sounds like a dismantle to sort kind of a problem.

Other thought is that since the slider control is a resistor itself and is directly controlling the threshold that the dimming occurs, have you tried (carefully) flushing it with electronic cleaner?


There are certainley different types my 89 735i manuel has the type where the whole mirror dips,
having same problem. Most likley wire fault. Not removed mine yet hopping someone else will come up with a solution.
