And no....don't say because I'm pressing the brake pedal or the emergency brake is on :)

The brakes don't seem to want to retract back.

What could be causing this? Need help desperately!

You never mentioned the mileage of this car...This has happened to me as well on my 88.
The problem was nothing more than stuck calipers.
Only one was sticking (left front) but considering I have 187K, I replaced both.
Are your rotors extremely hot after a short drive? feel each one and see which caliper is sticking. If it is indeed the master cylinder, then all your rotors will be very hot, not just one.
